SCHOOL TOURS
School tours are free for students and staff. “Life Without Electricity” is the tour theme. Early Americans lived in log cabins to Victorian mansions. There are many “hands on demonstrations” for the students to participate.
Demonstrations include:
- Creating music from years gone by on a pump organ; students take turns playing a few songs.
- Handling wool before and after it is spun into yarn on a spinning wheel.
- Trying a hand at a hand crank corn sheller.
- Taking a turn sharpening a wooden knife on the grinding wheel .
- Sewing on a treadle sewing machine.
- The Mansion’s Victrola has entertained for well over 100 years. Students wonder how it works if it is not plugged in!
- An antique music box plays a variety of tunes.
